The role of international organizations in the spread of genetically modified food
Papić-Brankov Tatjana, Lovre Koviljko
Numerous international organizations on the direct or indirect way influence
the diffusion of genetically modified (GM) food. Particularly important role
in this process play a World Bank (WB), World Trade Organization (WTO),
Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the
Organization for Food and Agriculture United Nations (FAO UN), various
international foundations, universities and other scientific institutions.
The paper concludes that taking in consideration, inequality of diffusion
recognizing GM plant culture, ignoring the interests of poor farmers and
countries, restrictions on technology transfer and general domination of the
private sector, certain international organizations are trying to reconcile
interest of multinational companies and the needs of the poor.
